“Muscle Mondays”

Did you know you have approximately 640 muscles in the body?! They all contribute to our movements in different ways due to their strength and pliability. Here is a quick overview of the largest and longest muscles in the body and how they can affect your daily routine…

In terms of surface area, the Gluteus Maximus, also known as the buttocks, is the largest muscle in the body and can be found posterior to the hip. It activates when extending the leg backwards as well as rotating the hip externally. If this muscle and other surrounding muscles such as the piriformis are too tight or too weak, they could present pain and stiffness in the lower back as well as the buttock.

The Sartorius muscle is the longest muscle in the human body and runs diagonally from the outside of the hip and runs towards the inner knee, where it inserts. Athletes who participate in sports involving kicking, or even people who regularly climb stairs daily, can suffer from tightness in this muscle. The symptoms can present at either the origin or insertion of the muscle.
